Last Light of 2022

Last Light of 2022

I don't get particularly sentimental about new years these days. From such a perspective, a new year can start any day you like. But I usually spend the last hours of the evening before and the first hours of the morning of a new calendar year in a quiet place. I have a very simple tradition of watching that last sunset and first sunrise, photographing or filming it if I'm so inclined, and just relaxing into those moments. No dwelling in the past. No fretting about the future. Just being in the moment. It's my goal to consistently live that way, but I'm human and this unique and seemingly catastrophe-driven existence we humans have created for ourselves challenges all of my best attempts to stay present. Recently I've started using a phrase with myself that I often say to my dogs when they're acting out in want of something. That phrase is, "You have everything you need."

It's true. They do. And so do I. It may not always be so, but right now it is. And for that, I can rest in gratitude.

My wish for you as time moves ever-swiftly forward is that you, too, have everything you need. And that you can rest in those moments of realization, in gratitude.

May you be well. May you be safe. May you feel the peace of being in this world exactly as you are, wherever you are.
